David Ross doesn’t get it….

Well… actually it isn’t just him  he just happens to be the most recent commentator I heard speak about this event. His words lit a slow fuse with me… that has been burning ever since… so here I go!

I have noticed something about people who opinionate from the left point of view…. they LOVE setting up conservative strawmen… and then with a mighty fury knocking them down… only problem is what they claim represents the conservative side of the argument is is far from reality so they just make it up. Case in point the filibuster by Wendy Davis. Here is part of the commentary with its citation:

“It took just 13 hours for Texas State Senator Wendy Davis to get national name recognition for filibustering that Texas abortion bill. And now she’s using that fame to try to change the national debate.

Once upon a time it was a moral issue – about when life begins.

But when she talked to Charlie Rose on CBS – one phrase kept coming back, “It’s big government intruding in private lives in Texas.”

She keeps mentioning big government, “Governor Perry and Lt. Governor Dewhurst insist on continuing to exercise big government.”

And you could dismiss that as just the phrase of the day. Except that lately, we’ve seen conservative states that usually try to keep government OUT of your life – making a big exception in this one area.

Polls show that most Americans don’t trust government. But for more and more women with problem pregnancies, their treatment is indeed the government’s business, whether they trust it or not.”

via Wendy Davis – and what she stood for.

First of all Mr. Ross… this is not as simple an issue as you wish to make it seem…. First the bill would not have prevented ANY woman from getting a medically necessary abortion. It was to limit elective abortions to  fetuses under 20 weeks gestation. With today’s technology 20 weeks is the leading edge of viability. In other words Mr Ross there have been several babies born prematurely to mothers that WANTED them who have been kept alive and are doing well with very few if any handicaps. So now we are into the realm of infanticide… if a 22 week old fetus can survive outside of the womb in our day with special care the issue is no longer just about the woman… we are killing babies in most cases simply because they are not wanted. The most recent stats I could find are here

So go ahead and applaud Ms. Wendy Davis as she champions the continued and unnecessary snuffing out of beating hearts just weeks away from freedom… Below is a link to a 20 week old fetus filmed during an ultrasound… just to clear up an intentional misconceptions that we are talking about a woman’s body alone…

19 week old fetus

Is it bias or common sense

It was inferred because I posted something I do not care about truth. Well that is blatantly false and so as I usually do I went and read what was explained to me as a very concise and well done article. It was well worth the read because it really helped me formulate something that has been bothering me ever since the terrible tragedy occurred.  It was the article by David Sirota and his wish that the Boston Terrorist was a white guy. He then goes into a long diatribe about white privilege which is very predictable and loaded with all kinds of stereotypes and outright lies. His “fear” is that good Muslims will be senselessly targeted by right wing white guys. He implies, as does our government unfortunately, that right wing Christians are much more dangerous then Muslim Extremists to our country. So I decided… I am going to research this! I tried every combination of words I could think of and I literally came up with a handful of names…when those names are examined maybe two of them are truly right wing/christian extremists… Timothy McVeigh and Scott Roeder. The others that get lumped in there were actually more left wing than right ring.  For example …Andrew Joseph Stack who flew his plane into an IRS building in Texas is often put on the right side but read his manifesto. here are some quotes:

“…institutions like the vulgar, corrupt Catholic Church…”

“The intent of this exercise and our efforts was to bring about a much-needed re-evaluation of the laws that allow the monsters of organized religion to make such a mockery of people who earn an honest living.”

“The recent presidential puppet GW Bush and his cronies in their eight years certainly reinforced for all of us that this criticism rings equally true for all of the government.”

“The communist creed: From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

The capitalist creed: From each according to his gullibility, to each according to his greed.”

Doesn’t sound right wing to me! And then what about Eric Rudolph in an interview with USA Today:

“Many good people continue to send me money and books,” Rudolph writes in an undated letter. “Most of them have, of course, an agenda; mostly born-again Christians looking to save my soul. I suppose the assumption is made that because I’m in here I must be a ‘sinner’ in need of salvation, and they would be glad to sell me a ticket to heaven, hawking this salvation like peanuts at a ballgame. I do appreciate their charity, but I could really do without the condescension. They have been so nice I would hate to break it to them that I really prefer Nietzsche to the Bible.”

I have to admit that I was surprised because of all the chatter on the left of the dangers of right wing extremists that it was very hard to find more than a few.

Now… from 1972 until and including the Boston attack … there have been 70 attacks by Muslim extremists causing the deaths of 3101 people. These numbers are just here in our country and doesn’t include  the bombing of the USS Cole, the Iran Hostages or Benghazi or any of the other dozens of attacks on Americans on foreign soil.  While in this country Muslim Americans killed in retaliation by “white guys” … one…..

So Mr. Sirota over at Salon.com wishes for a white guy to be found his comments are just as bigoted as anyone who might have said they wished it was a Muslim. Why? because Muslims are protected under hate crime legislation in this country… in some cases they have more privileges then “white guys” on the right. Did you know that while TSA pats down Nuns, grannies and little kids.. Muslim women can only be patted down about the head and neck. As the left was gleefully suggesting it was a disgruntled right winger responsible I did not see one person suggest they shouldn’t be jumping to conclusions… yet if someone would dare to mention they may be  Islamic extremists you were profiling and being an “islamophobe”. Here is the difference in perception… where leftists see white privilege and bigotry as the cause for White guys to think that way …..here is the real reason… over 40 years now radical Islamists have been wreaking horror around the world especially towards Americans (the great Satan). All these attacks just happened to be committed by middle easterners who practice an extreme form of Islam… being suspect of event that appears to follow the same MO as other Jihadist attacks is not being bigoted or Islamaphobic… it is using reason and common sense and recognizing where acts similar to these have historically originated. That is called critical thinking… not bigotry.

Finally the greatest of all ironies is that the left is doing to a large group of Americans, who for the most part have done nothing to anyone, what they fear will be done to the Muslims… Biggest difference the percentage of Christian Extremists killing people in the name of Jesus is minuscule compared to the number of Muslims who want to see us dead…  and are determined to kill as many of us as possible…. all for the Glory of Allah and for the Caliphate.

I am not blaming all Muslims. For my former parish I was on the Muslim-Christian interfaith committee… The truth is Islam has a problem that only the peace loving Muslims can solve… until then… until they can denounce and actually take action to reclaim their faith in an active way… sadly, because of their extremist brethren, they will at times fall under suscipicion… that is not hatred, bigotry but fact … it is not caused by white guys hating them but by other dark skinned guys hijacking their religion and killing hundreds if not thousands of innocent people.

’It was a sign’

I am not sure what to make of all this. To me it is unsettling that the media loves this Pope… or at least they love the image they have of him. As is usual with the Left, they focus on fluff and feelings not substance. The people they quote, while I am glad for anyone who returns home, seem to be more worried about appearances than actual truth and worship.

For example “Rosa” came back to the Church because the pope was Latin and she is Puerto Rican and that while bishop he rode the bus to work and now as pope will be living in a guest house instead of the “opulent” papal apartment. As someone who is a practicing Catholic and one who remains current with all things Catholic I would suggest that there may be other reasons for the pope not to be living in the papal apartments. It is obvious that Pope Francis is a simple man and a man who easily relates to people. I understand the attraction the pope has to Rosa’s and other’s like her but I wonder what will happen to her faith when the time comes that she realizes the Church is still the same Church and not what the media has been trying to project. I pray that she and the others so enamored with the media portrayal will not be let down if the rosy glow fades. A quote from Rosa:

“He’s not letting himself be controlled by the rest of the church,” Rosa said. “He’s his own man.”

This is the media’s portrayal of the pope and if Rosa believes this then she doesn’t understand her Catholic faith. The Catholic faith is not what the pope wears, where he lives, where he is from or his pastoral style.  The power of the pope is in the office he occupies not in his person. That is why Francis can be pope even though Benedict is still alive. Francis, similar or different as he may be from the other 265 popes before him, cannot change what has been passed down by those before him and held intact through the Magisterium. This means that even though he doesn’t wear the red shoes, won’t be living in the papal apartments and doesn’t use the popemobile he will still be teaching what the Church has always taught. Unfortunately those Catholics who are buying the media portrayal of a new church will be disappointed to discover that divorce is still not allowed nor is contraception, abortion, and homosexual marriage.

Personally I think the media believes that because they have been so successful in their attempts to sway the American public into accepting secularism and socialism despite our history and founding documents that they can do the same with the Church. No doubt they will succeed in confusing some, causing more division (including possibly schism) and inciting dissent among the marginal believers out there and they will relentlessly demonize and penalize any Catholic who holds fast to the truth… I see that already. One of Pope Francis’ predecessors described current days with clarity… at the time his name was Cardinal Karol Wojtyla he said:

We are now standing in the face of the greatest historical confrontation humanity has gone through. I do not think that wide circles of the American society or wide circles of the Christian community realize this fully. We are now facing the final confrontation between the Church and the anti-Church, of the Gospel and the anti-Gospel. This confrontation lies within the plans of divine providence. It is a trial which the whole Church . . . must take up.”

Karol Wojtyla, Philadelphia, 1976, printed on November 9, 1978 in the Wall Street Journal”

Now Blessed John Paul II ….He was different too…..

’It was a sign’: Lapsed Catholics lured back by Pope Francis.

Just some thoughts…

Tomorrow is THE day. I have found myself wishing that it was an election just like in the “old” days. Back when the parties went in and out of power and our country kept running… just like it always had. Something has happened in the past couple of decades or so. I can only explain it from my vantage point. First, I grew up in a Kennedy era Democrat family. My dad… a blue collar guy, union carpenter and my mom the usual “stay at home” mom. I voted for Bill Clinton in his first term…today I am a registered Republican. I did not leave the Democrat party… but rather, as President Ronald Reagan famously said, the Democrats left me. Republicans have not become more conservative…. rather Democrats have swung so far left that commonsense and traditional values seem “extreme” to them when in reality it is they who have become extreme. To me the perfect example is the Left’s sophomoric fixation on everything sexual. Every campaign ad I have heard or seen, from the most local to the national level, the Left talks about sex related topics. Gay marriage, free contraceptives, abortion… crass, suggestive ads about your “first” time, the Sandra Fluke tour complaining about a war on women because she has to buy her own contraceptives, voting “like your lady parts depend on it”, “dancing vaginas” all this from a party whose leader is the father of two young girls. It is quite disheartening… if the rest of the world, especially our President’s Jihadist friends, thought we were depraved before…what must they think about us now?

According to the Democrats own political platform, contraceptives, abortion, infanticide, and gay marriage are the most important issues facing our nation. The game plan is destroy your opponents… calumny, deception, demonization… whatever it takes to win. Yes… there are some on the Right who get right down in the dirt with them but, once again, most of the ads I see from the Right focus on jobs, fiscal responsibility and protecting families, conscience rights and a return to the Constitutional principles this country was built on… and they are labeled “extreme”, a war on women and a threat to the middle class… really?

In the past month I have participated in two events that really gave me an interesting perspective. They were both Pro-life related. We prayed next to an abortion clinic and yesterday stood in silent witness in a “life chain” at a busy intersection (on the roadside). The first, at the clinic, was in a heavily “blue” area. We had a few horn honks, waves and thumbs up in support but a lot more middle fingers and shouts of unbelievably  vulgar comments… surprisingly most from men (to a group mostly of women). Yesterday, the Life Chain was in a more “red” area. The support was definitely much higher and the vulgarity lower (but still mostly from men). Last night I was thinking of these experiences, the election and the ads that are running and what is the driving force behind the parties. I remembered the Chik-fil-a situation… thousands and thousands of Americans standing up for what they believed in… all done in an orderly and peaceful manner… then I remembered the supporters of gay marriage who defaced and vandalized Chik-fil-a property and harassed those waiting in line to buy sandwiches in support. Then there was the OWS street crowd who left garbage, human excrement by the tons for others to clean up, damaged and destroyed property, filled their tent cities with drugs, sex, abuse and crime (including rapes and murder) supported by the Left who at the same time condemned the Tea Party as racist (with absolutely no proof), that is a group that follows the letter of the law, leaves the areas they meet in the same condition they found them and are not only peaceful but are so well mannered you can bring young children to them. Finally, I thought of New York… the Left (Union workers) turning away non-union workers while millions of people still sat in the dark without heat, water or food…. In the end I found myself thinking… Regardless of the outcome tomorrow, WTSHTF (and it will), I am glad I will be in a “redder” area…

Cloud of witnesses

“My longing for truth was a single prayer.”

On this glorious feast day I would like to introduce one of my spiritual sisters. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross or St Edith Stein. Edith was a Carmelite nun. She was born into a Jewish family was schooled as a philosopher and was a prolific writer. She was also a feminist in the best sense and she was, early on, also very secular. The story goes she was visiting a philosopher friend.and she picked up the autobiography of St Teresa of Avila and read it. She supposedly put down the book and said “this is truth”. She had had a  profound intuition of God as Truth. She truly is my spiritual sister because in her I see many of my own yearnings, thoughts, beliefs and hopes. I, too, heard the voice of God in my search for truth. St Edith’s life ended  on August 9,1943 as a POW in Auschwitz. St. Edith Stein pray for me and the whole world!

One of the most misunderstood beliefs of the Catholic faith is the “communion of saints” . It is defined:

The communion of saints (in Latin, communio sanctorum), when referred to persons, is the spiritual union of the members of the Christian Church, living and the dead, those on earth, in heaven, and, for those who believe in purgatory, those also who are in that state of purification.

They are all part of a single “mystical body”, with Christ as the head, in which each member contributes to the good of all and shares in the welfare of all.”

It is based on St Paul’s writing in 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 “As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. Now the body is not a single part, but many. ” and 1 Cor 6:17 “But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him” Also Finally  Hebrews 12:22 “and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven, and God the judge of all, and the spirits of the just made perfect”

The Communion of Saints is made up of three parts. First, the Church Militant. That is all believers on earth journeying to their homeland… the Heavenly Jerusalem. Our job is to be Christ in the world in every generation through our love of others and the witness of Christian virtue.  The second is the Church Suffering, those who earthly journey has ended but are now being purified in purgatory (Hebrews 12:22 above) and whose job is to intercede for the Church on earth through prayer and suffering. Finally, the third is the Church Triumphant. They are those already in heaven who intercede unceasingly before the Face of God for the other two parts. They are those of whom Paul says in Hebrews 12:1 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses…” In short we are never alone because once joined to Christ in Baptism we can never be separated from the Head… Christ or from the Body… the Church. We are all one! Such a beautiful truth!
